New York Venture Summit

December 7, 2016/in Blog /by Ravi Shinde

The 16 annual New York Venture Summit took place last week and there were more fast pitches happening at the Summit than at Yankee stadium, and with much higher stakes. If the players have the right product and the right plan and the right pitch, they can land funding that could be a game changer for them. GetAssist.com founder and president Bruce Fikowski, from Calgary Alberta, was in the thick of it pitching his newest network and there was lots of interest in this homegrown app.

The Summit is the premier industry gathering connecting venture capitalists, commercial VC’s, angel investors, technology transfer professionals, senior executives of early stage and evolving growth corporations, university scholars, incubators and premier service providers. The opportunity to get an audience with this pre-qualified group of potential investors was immeasurable, said Fikowski. This fast-growing app is exactly the type of business these investors are looking to get behind.

After five years of R&D, the global multi-purpose app GetAssist.com, was launched in October of 2015. One of the main unique features of the app is the Make a Request button that puts people in touch with local quality service providers to get people the help they need, when they need it. Since the launch in October the company has recruited over 1300 businesses in Calgary which lead them to open their next market in Edmonton six short months later with another 400 businesses and counting. Two other Alberta markets are opening up in August of 2016 with plans to open two new markets every three months.

The apps that have longevity are ones that were created to fulfill a need. Often you hear people say someone should invent something that does “this. Well Bruce Fikowski did just that. The idea of GetAssist came to Fikowski when he realized he needed to be engaged with social media to keep track of his family that was dispersed across the country but was frustrated with the traditional social networking options. That coupled with the fact that he needed to find someone to install a light above his kitchen table and after many frustrated phone calls was unable to find anyone that would take on a small job within his budget. He thought there has got to be someone out there that wants to do this job. That’s when the idea of GetAssist was born.

In the R&D stage Fikowski found he was not the only one frustrated with the existing social network apps. The research pointed towards a growing population of users who were tired of the unwanted advertising, unwanted content and lack of privacy and security. People are getting tired of connecting for the sake of connecting and wanted to start using social media as a purposeful tool. Fikowski turned a need into a thriving sustainable business that helps small to medium sized businesses reach a clientele they would not otherwise be able to afford to reach. This lead generation from the Requests coupled with a free simple HR/Project management tool is why businesses are signing up in droves. The free, clean, ad-free platform is why social users are continuing to use the app to connect and Make Requests to make their lives a little easier.

As Fikowski waits to find out if he made a home run with any of the investors, the game must go on for GetAssist and it’s a fast paced, action packed game with exponential growth in app users and new markets.

As the societal pressure for women to look younger mounts, many cosmetic procedures have become more popular recently to fulfill the increased demand for a younger looking appearance. Botox has become one of these procedures, which we will discuss the pros and cons of below. But before we can do that, first, we have to define what Botox is and what it’s not.

In recent years, the rate at which children have been diagnosed with ADHD has increased dramatically. While some parents contest that their children most definitely have ADHD, others are certain that ADHD is just a misdiagnosis for “gifted” children. These gifted children have been referred to as Indigos.

How to Avoid Home Buyer’s Remorse

November 23, 2016/in Blog, Lifestyle /by GetAssist Author

how to avoid home buyer's remorse

When putting an offer on a home, there are a few things that can make you start thinking that you’ve made a bad decision. The main cause of home buyer’s remorse is talking to other people. Once you’ve put in an offer to purchase, it’s only natural to let everyone close to you know. Everyone is going to have an opinion, and even though family & friends mean well, it can make you start to second guess your decision.

I always advise my clients to wait until the condition period is over before they start spreading the news that they have bought a place. A lot can happen in that couple of weeks, and statistically, only 80% of deals go firm. That’s not to say that you can’t let people know that you have put in an offer on a place, however, I would not get into details & features about the home. Remember, you are buying the place for you, not your friends or family. They don’t get to live there! The second reason is that people feel compelled to continue looking for a property even though they have an offer in on another place. Big mistake! There will always be another home that will suit your needs. Looking at other houses at this time introduces doubt into the process, leaving you stressed, and more than likely, it will now take much longer to get you into your home.

A few things you can do to mitigate those feelings of remorse is to review your wants and needs. You more than likely put an offer in on a house because it hit a lot of points that you want in a home. What features of the property stood out for you? Did you find many houses that met your needs? If you backed out of this contract, is it realistic to think you will find a better home? Also, have a conversation with your agent. He will be able to review the reasons that made you decide to submit an offer to purchase.

Remember that the feeling of remorse can happen. Take steps to make sure you take the uncertainty out of buying.

It is important to look for an agent that empowers the home buyer in their decision making. In my business, I make sure that my clients are coming to a decision on their own. I allow them to take as long as they need. I find that most do find the place that is right for them and they are happy with their choice. Make sure your agent educates you about the process, so you end up comfortable with your choices.

Give the Gift of Social Media to Keep the Family Connected

November 2, 2016/in Blog, Family, Lifestyle /by Rebecca LeClaire
Does your family still have some social media holdouts? Social media has become like breathing to most of us – but, there are probably still those among your kin who remain uncomfortable with it, either for privacy or technical anxiety reasons. Usually, these are some of the most cherished or interesting people in your clan; maybe it’s the adored matriarch or your eccentric uncle Beauford whose life is one long fish tale. It feels like they are being left out from the connection gained by sharing pictures and funny things the kids say on your everyday social media platforms. And when everyone gets together, inevitably the conversation sounds like, “I saw what you posted, I can’t believe how funny that was… that was the cutest thing I have ever seen… how did that go?” Your beloved social media holdout has no idea what that was, and you worry that they may feel consigned to oblivion.

Solving This Year’s Halloween Conundrum

October 14, 2016/in Blog, Community /by Rebecca LeClaire

Trick-or-treating is community at its best. Adults, young and old use their resources to buy candy or toys to hand out to local children. A spark of mystery is in the dark air, full moon bright in the sky… wind blowing leaves around the ankles of the little goblins and ghosts wondering if they really could pull off a trick if no treat is offered. Moms and dads catch up over hot chocolate in thermoses waiting at the ends of driveways. Neighbors appear at doors who are seldom seen and surprise you with pure delight at the maturation and appearance of those growing up in view.
